Windows 7 Ultimate 64bits freezes randomly

Iv'e been having some problems with Windows 7 Ultimate 64bits, it usually hangs after 5minutes/1hour and the computer wont respond to the keyboard/mouse so I have to reboot it manually.

Iv'e tried reinstalling Windows serveral times and it's fully updated (Windows Update), I had Windows 7 32bits RC1 before this and had no problems whatsoever.

Have you gone to the ASUS website and downloaded the latest drivers for Windows 7 or are you using the default drivers installed by Windows 7?

Also, how is your cooling? Have you monitored your temps? Freezing/locking up could mean either overheating (CPU, your video card, the BIOS)? Have you tested your memory? Maybe your memory is bad?

One thing you could definitely do is go into your BIOS and have it reset the settings by loading in the setup default values. This usually resets it to less aggressive settings. I'd try this first. Then, start testing the memory and such to see if that's bad and also monitor the temperatures of the system and the CPU. There should be a program that came with the motherboard, usually on the CD that comes with it.

Hi, I'm only using the drivers provided by Windows Update, I only installed the nvidia drivers manually (the problem came before this), And about temps, I included a log from cpu-z, I'm not certain on how I can check the temps another way 😛

You can get any number of temperature monitoring software:

■CPU-Z
■Speedfan

There should be a monitoring program supplied on the CD/DVD that came with your motherboard. Otherwise, go to the ASUS website and find the support page for your motherboard and they'll have the latest Windows 7 drivers and tools for download from their.

I might have found the problem, I ran the computer on for 4 hours (No internet connection) and no freezes/hangs whatsoever, once i inserted the internet cable the freezes came.

Iv'e tried to reinstall the network driver several times, no luck.

Im using: Atheros L1 Gigabit Ethernet 10/100/1000Base-T Controller

Any help is appreciated!

I dont know about that....my vote would be its a RAM issue - and RAM issues will come and go if you change things - apps, drivers, buffers, etc. If it freezes, it usually indicates something returned bad data to the cpu which usually locks it up. The most common device to fail is RAM. I suppose it could be the network device is returning bad data.

Run memtest on your system to remove it as a possible failure. then focus testing on the Atheros device.

i am guessing the Ethernet controller is on board? if it is then one thing you could try is to get a cheap Ethernet card and install it and disable the on board one and see if it still freezes. maybe try another Ethernet cable too. you never know it might work

I agree with vvhocare5. I'd run several passes of memtest to rule out the ram as the problem. A bad ethernet port would most likely corrupt data not freeze the computer unless there is a grounding problem on the port.
