I have seen this problem before on many different websites and forums, however it appears that my situation has become quite unique.
My computer was built 3 years ago by myself and contains a 128gb Samsung MZ-7PD SSD. This was the only drive that this computer contained while Windows 7 was clean installed onto this drive. 1 year later, I installed a freshly formatted HDD from a previous computer build and had no problems up until this past week. No BIOS startup settings have been changed since the installation of this HDD.
After shutting my computer off for the evening, it stated that Windows 7 updates were required, and as always I left it to do its own thing. The next evening after work, I attempt to boot and receive the "BOOTMGR is missing" prompt. I boot BIOS and it shows that everything is in the correct order.
Now, when I insert my Windows 7 disc to attempt a boot from it, I had no problems and when attempting a system restore to a time when I installed Python (about 3 weeks prior) it went through the entire process and then proceeded to tell me it had failed. I then found a forum stating that if this may happen, unplug all other HDD's and proceed to try again. However when I unplugged my HDD, my Windows 7 disc came up with the message stating that "System Repair is incompatible with this version of Windows" message.
I plugged the HDD back in, and proceeded through all of the common bootrec.exe steps. I decided to do another clean install on my SSD while having the HDD unplugged. This seemed to work, and I never plugged the HDD back in. I proceeded to power down for the night, after being prompted there were no more updates available.
However, after booting this morning successfully, I was prompted there were Windows 7 "critical updates" that were required to be installed. I continued as such, and after 2 restarts and 10 minutes passing by, I again have a missing BOOTMGR. Once again I can not use the repair utility from my Windows 7 disc without plugging in my HDD, although it was unplugged for the entire duration of the clean install, and was never plugged back in after.
Here's my predicament:
1) Could this be a problem that is contained within my SSD? Corrupt, dying, etc.
2) Could this be a problem within my MOBO?
3) Could this be a problem with Windows 7 in general?
4) Why is it that it requires my secondary HDD to be plugged in to begin the Windows 7 install disc repair utility? (Even though it was not plugged in for the fresh install) I have only ever seen the opposite, where you must disconnect a second hard drive in order for the system repair utility to work on a Windows 7 install disc.
