Hello, I think I can rule out windows 8 from what I want, but windows 7 is still an amazing operating system. Do you think I should stick with Windows 7, or will there be compatibility issues later? Windows 10 is fairly new though, so which operating system do you think I should get?

Windows 10 boots up faster and support DX 12.
Windows 7 boots up very slow and only support DX 11.
If you are building a new PC definitely get Windows 10.
Windows 10 is made for newer hardware and has better optimization than Windows 7.

You really think win7 is gonna last forever? Sooner or later Microsoft is gonna start pushing and limiting game support.

I don't know for others, but for me this whole privacy thing died a long time ago. You want privacy go on linux.

What advantages does DX12 have?

Privacy is not a problem, google does the same and so does apple. Not going to explain (what search is for ) but if your honest and not a terrorist theres nothing to worry about.

DX12 to put simply one of the more significant advantages of it is it can allow all your cpu cores to communicate with your gpu simultaneously compared to DX11 limited to one cpu core. Albeit instructions for this to happen will need to be enabled on hardware level of a modern graphics card which allows it and also waiting for games to arrive to take advantage of it.

Besides memory usage differences, Win10 being a little leaner, Win7 is a great os to stay with for the time being depending on your hardware and if considering future upgrades - maybe then think about Win10. Also search Vulkan - Successor to Opengl, which the latest Doom engine uses. It competes with DX12 and also not os exclusive, so theres that for Win7.

Both DX12 and Vulkan will be awhile yet before enough games are out to decide when to go for it, for now upgrading to Win10 won't be much difference besides a slight learning curve.

DX12 is going to make a difference but its just not going to be as massive as you expect. DX12 will probably be most advantageous for players where their graphics card is the weakest link. But as for most of us the CPU is the weakest link so unless BI can use DX12 to take a significant amount of the strain off the CPU and hand it to the graphics card then your probably only going to see a minor difference and maybe some new slightly better graphics as more options come available. This pretty much sums it up. DX is the main source for game developers. A majority of games run on DX, for the future you will see a lot of games featuring DX12 support. For example take the game Quantum break. IT can't run on win 7 as it requires win 10 and dx12.

Funny you mention that, my home computers are Linux.
