Windows 7 wont detect my router

I have a Windows 7 Home premium, from 6 years. I try to connect my internet but it isnt working. I used and ethernet cable, but it still cant detect it. My router is a Xfinity Arris TG682. Ive tried windows help but it just wont work. Plz help

Upon plugging the Ethernet cable into your computer, what happens? Does something happen at the bottom right of the screen, an icon changes or example?
