Hello, windows 7 wont install generic drivers for any usb device Example- keyboard, mouse, external hard drives. Devices show up in dev.and printers as unspecified, when I use the troubleshooting tool, the message says device has no driver. Yes even wired keyboard and mouse! Please help!

Can you give us a bit more information about your system and the specifics of this problem. For instance when this started happening, if this is a recent install of the OS, if it was an upgrade, did it install drivers before or not, etc.

At this time I'm not sure what I can tell you as there isn't much to go by and so much that could be causing the issue without much to go on.

For the mouse and keyboard (if they are standard keyboard and mouse, not gaming one with programmable buttons, usb and speaker/microphone socket, etc...), you can do a manual selection of the driver. Click browse my computer for driver software> let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer

using Win 7 Pro(had for yrs) Been using wireless k&mouse(they are the only things that work). No new changes just plugged in an ext hard drive (Seagate) Win attempts to install driver then says its unsuccessful. In dev&printers it is listed as unspecified (but it says FreeAgent GoFlex underneath the generic icon)

Okay thanks for the info. I'm going to ask a few questions and have you do a few checks.

Questions:
1) Is there any other weird activity lately?
2) Are there any USB devices that you may have used before that still work or install on other ports? (USB installs drivers for each port in Windows).

Tests:
Can you run a Harddrive test using SeaTools or WDC Data Life Tools this will require a CD and a lot of time (maybe something to do before you go to bed or before you leave for work or something). The test I want run SeaTools calls Long Generic and WDC called it an Extended Test.

Another thing I could think of running is chkdsk on your boot drive.

Corrupted data could possibly cause what you are experiencing as it would keep windows from being able to change or access the data needed to install a USB device if it became corrupted so I am going to have you check for that doing the above. Unless there are some other issues we don't know about this to me seems the most likely culprit at the moment especially given what seems to be a working USB device in the system.

Check your group policy. You may have disable driver installation there.

Do the opposite because that guide is for disabling driver installation.

Also check the "change device installation settings".

It happens. I have that problem before. All usb driver installed apart from my mouse. Not recognise, no generic driver and I do a manual installation as I suggested on my first post to fixed it.

I think you may have the same problem but for the majority of the device.

I was about to try an 8gb flash drive that I've used before but I seemed to have lost it and I'm not going to be able to think about anything else until I find it. So it might be awhile before I do the things ur suggesting and get back to u but thank u so much for the advice and I'll let u know something as soon as I do

Not sure if this thread is still open, but here goes. I'm having the same, exact issue with my system.

For a while now, no matter what device I've tried to add [mice, keyboards, sound cards, audio adapters, etc.], the drivers for it never get auto-installed. I get the little icon in the taskbar that says it's searching for the right driver, but it's never successful. Though this has been going on for a few months now, never had issues prior to it.

The latest is Microsoft's SideWinder X4 Keyboard. I've tried to ignore it, but this is the last straw. From time to time, ever since this cropped up, I've tried every type of troubleshooting method I can think of and nothing seems to work. Have searched online for a solution without having found one.

I'm sure there's a ton of people out there with this same, exact issue. So, has anyone figured this out?
