I have Windows Update setup to notify me when updates are available rather than automatically updating on its own. About a week ago, a message popped up indicating there were two updates. I checked both and found nothing unusual about them, so I downloaded and installed both. They were important updates and not optional updates.
After installation, the system required a reboot. Upon reboot, Windows 7 would not start up. It would get to the point where the Windows 7 logo would appear then the screen would go black and a blinking cursor would appear.
I left it like that for awhile hoping it would start up anyway, but no luck.
After doing some searching on the Internet, I found a couple of options to try. The one I picked was to boot up into Safe Mode then run Check Disk on the C: drive (the only drive I have on this computer). I ran Check Disk opting to have it automatically fix file system errors and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. The diagnostic took several hours to complete, but once it was done the computer booted into Windows 7 normally and has been working fine for the past week.
However, yesterday it began freezing up while browsing and using Word documents. I used task manager to terminate both. Browser and Word worked fine for awhile, but then it did the same thing again. Terminated both via Task Manager and once again things seemed fine. I did shut the computer down before going to sleep last night.
This morning I tried to boot the computer. Windows 7 looked like it was going to start, but instead it took me to the Launch Setup Repair (Recommended) or Start Windows Normally screen. I chose Launch Setup Repair and it looked like it was beginning the repair process. The screen went black and remained so for over an hour without any signs of progress.
I shut the computer down and tried rebooting into Safe Mode. Got to the Safe Mode screen that offers options (Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking), selected Safe Mode, but instead of booting to Safe Mode, it once again took me to the Launch Setup Repair and Start Windows Normally screen. Tried Launch Setup Repair once more and it has been sitting on a black screen for the last two hours.
Please help. I work from home on this computer and need it up and running ASAP! Thank you.
