To start off my family got a new Asus RT-N66U router about 3 weeks ago, set up was a breeze, and so far things have been working splendidly. This morning, I woke up to a note saying parent's desktop not internet. Oh boy, so I hop on my windows 8 machine and see if it has internet, and it does. Then I open um my macbook pro to see if it has wireless, it does.

So now I go to my parents Windows 7 Desktop, I check the cables, and reboot. No internet, windows says network cable unplugged. I know that's a dirty lie, so I go into the Network Controller settings, I disable and re-enable it. Presto, I connects to the network, and about 30seconds-1minute later it disconnects saying network cable unplugged. I uninstall/reinstall drivers, try to rollback the drivers to see if it helps. It doesn't. The only thing that works is to disable/enable the Controller and that only yeilds about 30 seconds of uptime.

i think it's probably a faulty controller card (Realtrek 11118DL). It's a built in controller card.

Any other possible solutions?

Thanks a bunch

Hi,

Dear sir
When you ask question in a forum, it is good to be polite (start by saying hi)

For your problem, 1st I would look at the connector for dust or if it is broken.
If all good I would try another Ethernet cable.
If still fail, you can buy a cheap Ethernet card for about 20-30$. But before that, I would scan for virus with malwarebytes / roguekiller just in case.

Good luck

To me it looks like you have a link speed problem from the computer to the router via the Ethernet cable.
I would check what speed the network of your parents on board network adapter is running at.
10Mb full duplex 100Mb Full duplex or 1000Gb Duplex speed.
Next pull the manual out and check the speed the Ethernet ports run on the router.
Set your parents Ethernet adapter to a fixed speed do not let it auto detect.
Also check if it has and option to power down when not in use, sleep mode.
Also check windows power settings as it could also be the cause.
