I'm going to be building a new gaming system and I was reading about Windows 7 and it's release date of April 10th. Is this the release for everyone or just the "testers." I'm still hearing that Vista is a mess and I was going to finally jump into the DX10 train. If Windows 7 is going to actually be released to everyone, should I wait or just go to Vista. Anyone recommend which Vista is better for games? Home edition?

Vista Home Premium 64 bit for builders (OEM). And just how is Vista a mess? Iv'e been using it since it came out and it works fine for me.

I personally used vista and its not a stable set of software its Windows ME with a pretty face. I have had game's crash, I have had programs crash, drivers issues you name it and its happened. Thats why I down graded to XP will worth the extra money. Not to mention XP is faster then vista by a good deal. As far as windows 7 goes there no official release date yet. People are speculating it could be out before Christmas but as it stands right now Microsoft hasn't made anything official (after testing the Windows 7 Beta 7000 build its solid software makes vista look beta lmao) In your case try to get a copy of XP Pro from newegg or some other website and just skip vista trust me you will be happier.

PS direct X 10 does look good but its pretty much worthless when game crash in it all the time lmao

Which games are you mentioning..

Because if your mentioning games like lineage 2, Ravenshield, shoot em up games that old or mmorpg's that old, there xp and below or Vista 32 bit and below, vista 64 bit is something that you can't really run those games on. You can, because i am, but, theres some things you have to do first. I've had Vista for over a year and it runs great for me. Old games or new games, faster downloads, easier management IMO.

Exactly. Our clan plays alot of games from UT99, UT3, to CoD4, etc... and most everyone of us use Vista without a hitch.

Well that makes us 2. I'm sick of vista crashing when im using media player and games like gears of war and witcher on 32 bit. And if windows 7 is vista with an even prettier face and a new name , please stay with xp.

Its a matter of knowing what is on the system, not just getting it and walla i can play anything i want, you have to manually setup some games to run at different modes.

So depending on how new his computer is, he could get a computer with over 3gb of ram, and vista 32bit or below could only bring-up 3gb or half out of how ever many gb's he has in his system, which could cause problems/delays. Thats another thing, if you have over 4gb of ram, 32 bit wont read all of it, just what its recommended to read.

If your going to get a highly updated computer, get Vista 64-bit.

Or, just have had bad experience because some things werent setup properly. Should know what your dealing with before you get it, read on the product and see what you can make out of it before trying to use it for anything and everything then, learning the hard way.

best way to go is Win XP Pro 64-bit, it's what i have, it makes use of ALL memory i throw at it, it's stable and it's familiar, not to mention it's not such a hog on resources as Vista is. Now Windows 7 won't be out for a little while and it will be a great OS, but for now, i'd go with XP 64-bit...

FullMetall: Im not saying anything, I've just read articles, looked up message boards on games and see how much Vista was slammed. When I built my first system, Vista wasn't released yet so I was just checking from others before I jump into Vista and find that I waisted $200 for a useless OS. I dont want to buy it, then go through the hassle to return it. I like to research and find other opinions to see how it is. I've used it on a demo machine in BestBuy. I was just curious to see how everyone on TH is viewing it (Vista). :D

Duuh, sorry, just saw your last message about how new my system would be....

I'm building a i7 920 gaming machine. I have an eye on the Asus mobo that everyone smiles at and I read anandtechs glowing report on it (as well as newegg reviewers). 6GB or 12GB (depending if the price goes down on 12GB), either GTX 295, or 4870, or 4850x2 and keeping any eye on the 5xxxx series thats due to come out. Xonar or SB XFI Fatality sound card. I'm still searching, researching, and getting opinions so these are all not set in stone...except the i7 920.

April 10th is the day for RC1, not when 7 will actually be sold. That is speculated to be sometime before the christmas season.

As for vista, it works fine with games. It bombed hard when it first came out, but after SP1 (and SP2 on its way) it is a solid OS.

Also note that if you want DX10 you will need to get vista.

its simple if you building a new computer with all new hardware and maybe with a little old hardware then vista will be stable. the only time your going to have problems with vista is if you going to install it on a PC that is 3-5 years old. Vista has been out for a long time now so unless your playing quake 3 arena or duke nukum 3D everything will run fine with Vista

I see. All new parts with the exception of my IDE DVD drive, although I might even scrap it for a SATA DVD drive. I saw one that is the same price as my IDe drive lol. Besides the cable for my DVD burner is a pain.

I will be playing: Sims 3, This is Vegas and Jumpgate Evolution (maybe DC comics online and Star Trek Online if it ever gets released). My old games that I still play is, Civilization 4 Beyond the Sword, Simcity 4 (depressed over how Simcities Societies came out), FSX, ZT2 and expansions, and Wildlife Zoo: Deluxe Edtion.

+1 for switching over to SATA... $25 gets you a decent one.

when i built my new system in '07 i kept my IDE DVD burner and audigy 2 sound card and both installed and worked with no issues. and recently upgraded my OS from 32 vista to 64 vista and my old soundcard still installs and works fine

i've used xp sp1-3 and switched over to vista when SP1 hit...and i asked myself, why didn't i do this sooner? imo, it's soooo much better than xp.

if you know what you're doing (how to properly build a comp, handle software), you will not have a problem. i mean thats common sense for all things comp. related no matter the OS. i never had vista crash on me and everything i've used before on xp, works on vista.

vista's image got badly damaged early on and by apple's 190238712 negative vista ads (seriously, if you use apple, you're paying more $$$$ for crappier products, spec wise). you need a decent machine to run vista smoothly, try it yourself and see the difference. im glad i did.

I skipped vista and using Windows 7 moving from Windows XP

I have used Vista but never liked it, reason is it feels cluttered and busy, and games didn't felt as if it was not performing as well as Xp.

Windows 7 feels and performs better then Xp for me

Vista can be a much better game platform than XP. For instance, with a multi-core CPU, the helicopter sim Blackshark can get up to twice the FPS with Vista over XP if you set "affinity" of the .exe file to all cores.

It seems likely that Windows 7 RC will be available to download all through May. I am intending to use it since I do not want to buy Vista and then pay to upgrade. If Microsoft released a formal upgrade offer for people getting Vista now, I might get it but it seems pointless to pay twice.
