So I just got a new hard drive enclosure for an external hard drive. I need this dearly because my Asus Eebook X205TA only comes with 18gb of space. So I need the extra space.
I plugged it up, installed a few games, and started playing, but then the game stopped abruptly. After further investigation, the hard drive will randomly disconnect then reconnect to my computer. It drops from everything, including windows explorer. It also seems that before it disconnects, the hard drive spins down and then light turns off, then immediately spins up again after reconnecting.
What I have already tried:
+Factory resetting computer
+Changing all power settings to disable usb selective suspend
+Adding the Registry key with the ID from device manager
+"Update device drivers" via device manager
Notable mentions:
-The hard drive enclosure is meant to be used on a usb 3.0 port, but I don't have one. Would that matter?
-The Hard drive will function fine if left comepletely alone. But after leaving it alone for a few minutes, if I come back and open a folder inside the hard drive, it disconnects immediately. Same with steam. Attempting to open a steam game located on the hard drive will immediately disconnect and reconnect it. So this has nothing to do with the power settings.
Any help is appreciated. I really don't want to install windows 7 just to find out the problem was with the enclosure, or that my laptop just won't run it.
Thanks, Luke.
