Hello i just upgraded my pc to windows 8.1 using an OEM disk and I have been having a issue with my pc freezing either during YouTube videos or playing games this never happened when on win 7 i have tried repairing the disk and just windows update. i don't want to try a fresh install till ive tried all other options.
my pc is
processor: amd fx 6300 @4 ghz
mobo gigabye 990fxa-Ud3 rev4.0
gpu radeon R9 280x msi twin frozr
HDD WD 1tb caviar blue

Try re-installing your Graphics driver and if possible Windows diagnostics as below...
First try System File Checker
Winkey plus 'X'
Choose Command Prompt (Admin)
Type sfc /scannow then Enter

It finds and fixes errors in Windows, but doesn't always report them. Run it and see if the fault disappears after re-booting your system
If corrupt files are found that can’t be fixed, try

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth (Observe spaces before /)

Re-run SFC

To view CBS Log

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >sfcdetails.txt

Search C drive for sfcdetails.txt or navigate to C:\Windows\System32 and scroll down.

i have tried what you have asked i even tried a fresh install after that didnt work but it is still happening but its more random i ran windows update diagnostic and it said there are missing or corrupt files and problems with recent update any ideas? thanks.

Time to check Hardware

1. Check System for overheating

D'load and run Speccy
http://download.cnet.com/Speccy/3000-2094_4-75181811.html
Check temperature after running a game for a while.
(Click Green tab next to Temperature for real time graph)

2. Check RAM.

If you have more than one stick, try running on one at a time. Or run Memtest 86.
Best run the bootable version, as it checks out the areas of RAM normally occupied by Windows. http://www.memtest.org/#downiso
Then create bootable CD or USB Flash

3. Check HDD for mechanical errors
