Windows 8.1 issues with scanning and freezing

Hi all :)

So, a little while ago my computer started freezing. It is quite random honestly. Sometimes it would freeze if I did something too quickly after turning it on, and other times after I tried to start a game. Eventually, I figured that it might be EA's Origins (since that stupid program has so many issues), so I stopped it from starting up on startup. The freezes seem to have stopped...but I can't be too sure (I have trouble with time, sorry).

Today, I saw that my scheduled scanning with windows defender stopped working. I figured that it needed an update, and proceeded to update. It claimed to be up to date, but it will not scan. Quick or full.

I'm thinking now that maybe something is wrong with a drive? But I don't know too much about how computers work. Can anyone help me out here? I think my PC is sick 🙁

Might certainly be HDD issues then. SMART values all passing? (if you don't have software for it already, speedfan is the easiest)

And wasn't kidding or sarcastic, I have literally never heard of someone who games that hasn't used malwarebytes. It is by far the most recommended second line of defense.

Yeah....I can't really afford to buy a random virus scan. Besides, windows defender doesn't even scan fully, so I don't have any reason to think that this one wouldn't do the same.

Nothing was detected. Also, it seems like you are having a bad day because of your sarcastic response, so here! Have an internet hug! *Hugs!* Feel better! :)

So, this is a bit silly, but I'm willing to admit it. I have a usb mouse...and it just so happens that the usb also connects to a wireless keyboard. So, my bf noticed that he had put a sweater on the keyboard...and that might have been pressing all these buttons and making the pc freak out because of all the nonsense that was going on with that. ha..ha...oh man...it's so stupid.

So, I'm going to keep an eye on it, but it hasn't cashed since we moved the keyboard lol. *super facepalm*

Thanks for helping me out though :)

They keyboard being pressed would not affect Defender in a way that would disable the virus scan portion. The freezes also shouldn't have really had anything to do with that either, though that all depends on your keyboard driver.

If you start having issues again, post an update.
