Our Acer Aspire M laptop was not connecting to the internet despite showing that we have a wireless connection. We've tried in both Chrome and Windows IE, but get "This page can't be displayed messages" after a significant period of time. After trying system restore to get back to the point before the issue began, we discovered the anti-virus needed to be turned off. During this process, we found that internet did work once the firewall was disabled. However, we don't want to go without firewall, do we? Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated!

Thank you. Unplugging the modem has worked in the past, however this appears to be isolated to this one computer. We have a total of 6 internet devices in the house, and the rest are working fine.

We had this issue with a Medion Akoya Laptop and Windows 8.1 Update-session of 12 Nov. 2014. After it, there was no Internet Access with working WIFI connection. The router didn't supply a valid IP-address to the Laptop anymore. However, a Windows 7 based Laptop connected to the same router, DID have full internet access without problems.
The solution turned out to be: chosing a Windows Restore Point from before Nov.12th., and restoring system files and registry with the Windows Restore function. Some element in this latest Windows 8.1 must have f*cked up the winsock system. After the fix, I switched the Updating function of Win 8.1 to manual-choice in stead of automatic, to not have that same crap installed again a second time.

My problem is:
After upgrade to windows 8.1, I lost wireless internetconnection. so I downgrade it to windows 8 which mean I have to recovery it(couldn't restore it) and re-install all programs I lost, then it's okay to connect to internet through WiFi. after a while, I saw the windows popup to ask me to upgrade to windows 8.1, and as stupid as me, I upgrade it to windows 8.1 again and only found out that I couldn't get online again through WiFi, so, I have to downgrade it to windows 8 and re-install all programs I lost, I don't know what hack is this, probably my Lenovo laptop's wireless drive doesn't support 8.1.
So, for now, I will stick to windows 8 until I find a positive solution from windows developer, very bad situation,

Thank you very much, leageorge, for your suggestion. I will get to testing it out right away tonight and get back to you on result.
