Windows 8.1 or Windows 10, which do you suggest and why?

Hello, I have been looking for an answer to this question for awhile now all over the internet but I could never find a solid answer to which is better and why.

Some people have said that Windows 8 is better because it doesn't force updates down your throat and because it's faster then Windows 10 for a gaming and internet browsing aspect. It was also mentioned that Windows 8 would not be good for future games.

Some people have said that Windows 10 is better because it is faster then it's younger brother and supports a lot of the newer games a lot better. And I also saw posts saying that Windows 10 was just made for spyware, constantly updating and being slow.

I would really like to read your opinions as I am building my own PC in the future and cannot decide between these OS. I'm also not an expert in computers so if I say something absolutely stupid and it doesn't make sense please forgive me!

I have Windows 10 (have for almost a year), I game on my PC, no problems no update problems either. If your worried about spy ware or any other kind of male ware just install some antivirus/spyware/malware software.

well, whole deal is still pretty much apples vs oranges.
Personally I think that windows 10 is faster/slightly better
In practice, difference isn't great and since there are not that many DX12 using games out yet, actual benefit of supporting DX12 isn't that big deal unless you are playing one of the games that supports it.

Constant updates can kind of be avoided if you have professional version, where you can delay auto install/reboot by up to a week. (you do normally boot/shutdown the computer in that time anyway)

That said, if you have specific reason to choose 8 (or 8.1) then do so.

Cant comment on games, I dont play them on this. Myself I'm using Win10. Why. I have no idea.

I suppose one good thing about it now, is the updates are cumulative. You dont spend all day getting updates

And even if you format the hdd, you'll only have 1-2 updates to install. And it's up to date

Only downside I guess is some companies (ie: TPlink) make crap drivers for Win10.

Which dont work. Or they make devices (ie: TPlink) that say they work with Win10, but the drivers dont even exist for Win10!

There's nothing on the hdd here that MS can look at anyway. There are programs that can disable the spying stuff (ie:Shutup10)

I went from Windows 7 to 10 and skipped Windows 8 completely but I did mess around with it on my fathers laptop. I work in a corporate environment and I think most businesses updated their OS's like this: Windows XP > Windows 7 > ?(probably Windows 10). So I've decided to follow the same trend in my home computing. Right now my office is using Windows 7 and I have Windows 10 at home but since their pretty similar environments it's not that big a deal to spend 8 hours on one at work and 1-4 hours at night on the other. Besides, Windows 8 is just too weird for my tastes lol.

I recall a few articles comparing game performance under Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 some time ago. Overall, there is virtually no difference. Some games performed marginally better than other games in Windows 8.1. On the flip side, that also means some games performed marginally better than other games in Windows 10. At think at best there was a 2% difference in performance. A 2% performance gain for a game running at 60 FPS means a gain of 1.2 FPS. If you can discern such a small performance difference, then good for you.

When it comes to "future games", Windows 8.1 will not support anything beyond DirectX 11. That means games that make use of DirectX 12 graphic effects will be limited to PCs using Windows 10... and that assumes you also have a GPU that is DirectX 12 compliant.
