windows 8.1 upgrade

i have windows 8 on my laptop, and 7 on my desktop.
just wondering, if i upgrade the laptop to win 8.1, does the product key remain the same as the one for win 8, or does the product key get replaced?
and if it is replaced, does this mean that i can use the win 8 key to install 8 on my desktop, while having 8.1 on my laptop?

Windows 8.1 is pretty much just a service pack. So no you don't get a new key.
