Has the Windows 8.1 update 1 solved the limited wifi problem seen before the update? I have an Asus notebook Q550 and when I upgraded to 8.1 about 3 months ago, I was forced to downgrade back to Windows 8 due to the limited wifi problem. I would like to upgrade again because the new features look very convenient, however I am worried my problem might arise again.

Yes that's what I was talking about. I wish they would just fix that already, because the update looks really good. I'm disappointed that I still don't get to try it out. Thank you for your help!

On my Acer Aspire Ones (I have two) I did the following:
1. Open Device Manager
2. Click on to expand 'Network Adapters'
3. Right-click on Broadcom 802.11n Network Adapter
4. Select 'Update Driver Software'
5. Select 'Browse my computer for driver software'
5. Select 'Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer'
7. Select 'Broadcome 802.11n Network Adapter (Broadcom)' - note NOT (Microsoft)
8. Select 'Next'
9. When done, select 'Close'

This was an EXCELLENT method THAT WORKED! I was stressing over WPA and WPA-2 nonsense! And Of COURSE going to the MS Web site for an Answer!!! For-Get-It! This was truly a daunting task! I have 11 computers on My "Network". The Newest and Most Modern Computer with Win 8.1 just would NOT connect. I had reset the network adapters, Uninstalled them! Nada! You know what Microsoft's solution is to Next to do? Physically, remove the Network Adapters~! This is Why all the smart people are here and the STUPID ones work in Redmond!
Thank you Very Much Kevin!! (It was the Wife's computer!)

The solution is very simple. if you can access the internet through any other way, get to the support website of your computer make(mine is Lenovo) download the driver for WLAN or wireless lan. Install it and then reboot. problem solved.

in windows 8.1 there is a bug, which will not allow you to connect to WiFi. so install the driver provided by the computer make.

Thanks, Kevin. Super! Works like a charm (MS should include this in their charms or at least provide a fix! Too much to ask?)

I got around this on a HP Stream 11

I have I think solved it by changing the adaptor security from default WPA 2 to 802.

This still results in a 'limited connectivity' flag but in fact the laptop can browse internet.

So I am hopeful.

Its still a nuisance when all I want to do in a new office or hotel is just connect and not try all the security types to find one that works

My kids decided to upgrade to 8.1 on our Lenovo laptop, and immediately this limited connectivity problem became apparent.
Kevin's info above has helped a heap!
Moral of story: Always stick to OEM and NOT shitty microsoft!
Many thanks again.

Don't worry Sneiderz Upgrade to Windows 8.1, you will not get this issue again. I had the this issue 5 months back when i upgrade to Windows 8.1.But that time It was the "Reset TCP/IP Stack and Auto-tuning" issue. But yesterday i upgrade the Windows 8.1 in one of my friend system, But I didn't get the error. May be Microsoft has been fixed it.

If you will get this error - here are some troubleshooting tips you can try them.
