Hello I have had problems updating my windows 8.1 for a while now. I have no idea why windows update is not working. I have searched online to find someone with the same problem but no luck. All I have found the people never registered their windows and mine is.

My Specs:
OS: Windows 8.1 - Registered
Windows is running on my 128gb SSD with 33gb left...and 2TB drive for storage
Avast Anti VIrus
AMD 8320 OCed - R9270x - Gigabyte FX 990
All drivers are up to date.

So every recent update I do will download...install...then when I restart to finish it will get to passed 17-60 percent then my computer restarts and says "Windows was unable to install updates, Please do not turn off your PC"

I Ran the Windows Update Trouble shooter and this is what it says

Yes, on Windows 8, go into general settings and scroll down. You should see a few options related to resetting the computer - now, keep in mind I haven't seen the end result, but there's one there (read carefully!) that should "Refresh the system without affecting your files and settings".

Theoretically, that's the one you're looking for, but do make sure to do a backup, just in case.
Thanks for the reply Canadian Ill try that

I also found two things I am going to try and see if it helps...
1. First I am going to run the DISM tool and see if that worked
2. If not I will run chkdsk and see if that repairs windows

Looks like the error happens when there is a curropt or missing windows file....Kinda weird since this is a pretty new fresh windows install

Ill keep you all updated

I've had Windows Update fail numerous times on my Windows 8 PC with 3rd-party virus protection software active. I uninstalled the 3rd-party virus protection software, turned on Windows Defender (Yes, there is built-in virus protection software in Windows 8) and now all of my updates function as expected. I've since run Windows Defender and have had no problem with updates.

Are you using virus protection other than Windows Defender? If so, turn it off and turn on Windows Defender before trying the update again.

I have tried the DISM.exe and a full chkdsk /f /r and non of those helped...still the same problem

It only seems to not work on updates that the computer has to restart to install...The one I am stuck on now gets all the way to 99% then says can not complete the updates.
I am going to try the sfc /scannow and see if that helps as well as the windows mem diagnostic test to see if ether of those help

I am also running Avasat AV...never heard of it having a problem with windows update but Ill uninstall and giive it a try
