Man, it looks dated already. Where's the IE9, this-is-2011-and-we-totally-ripped-of-Linux-but-you'd-never-know-unless-you-ever-see-a-Linux-package-manager look?

I mean, come on! If it's going to be a place for all your apps it should give you the power to uninstall them as easily as you installed them.
If it's trying to mimic the usability of the Linux GUI environment it needs to be doing a better job.

There is already a universal App Store for all operating systems, including mobile ones.

Over 212,000 for Windows
Over 31,000 for Mac
Over 426,000 for Mobile

It's called www.download.com and it's part of Cnet and it's been going since 1996, it has free software, shareware, trialware and purchase.

Why the hell would you go anywhere else?

Cloud the only thing you need to know why Windows 8 isn't gong to be a success in my opinion. With those who value their security and privacy anyway.

I have to wonder which idiot at Microsoft had that idea, lets take everyone's private data, files and browsing history etc and store it on the internet where its much more vulnerable to hacking and data theft, and to being covertly accessed by governments.

It seems people have forgotten that the feature isn't finished yet, this is more or less just a alpha version and simplistic because of that reason.

As verrin said it does resemble the Ubuntu software centre but also mixes in part of Android's app store website.

This look uuuugly! It is most likely not real. MS should have thought this up a decade ago, they need competitors to tell them what to do

I never understand how Apple can sue another company for using the word "app store." Did they think they invent the word app and the word store? Or do they really think the two word can be consider asset of their company.

As long as Apple's nominal competitors are content with trying to copy their success, Apple has nothing to worry about.

An app store on a desktop OS? What a novel concept! Where did Microsoft rip that one from?

I was interested in Software Center on Ubuntu. I was interested in the Mac App Store for OSX. Microsoft has, yet again, taken an idea and just not improved or branched off from it at all - and that disinterests me.

Is there a download.com phone application? That would truly mkae it the universal "app store".

Which in reality is only a small number of people. Most people say they care about privacy, but they also use Facebook and tell the world what they are doing and thinking throughout the day. Just don't tap into their unsecured Wifi that is openly broadcasting every email and every password that is sent over a standard HTTP connection out into the street. That's going too far.

Do you honestly think it is easier to gain access to the contents of a multi-million-dollar corporate datacenter than a home PC filled with spyware?

Probably all the datacenters in the 'cloud' will just end up in China anyway. Because it'll be far, far cheaper to host them there than anywhere else. And we all know, the wallet speaks loudest.

And yes, by that time privacy will be non-existent. Seems like it's getting that way now. Hope I turn out wrong.

The Microsoft App Store looks interesting. Apple should be flattered by this. They really did pioneer this.

I'll stick with download.com if presented with a choice, but I like choice.

[citation][nom]hoofhearted[/nom]Steam is my only appstore. Not cluttered with all this productivity crap.[/citation]
They have apps? Steam is good and all, but for games and AMD video drivers only.

Sorry, but I can't think of anything as useless as an App Store, except for the United Nations Commission on Human Rights.

Apps are mostly teeny-tiny little one-function programs for platforms that could be so much more. Calculator app when one could use a spreadsheet. Fingerpainting instead of Photoshop. Plus, most of them push ads and / or report your personal information back to some server in a country that I can't even pronounce.

I don't have a problem with the existence of these things; I'm free to ignore them. But we're going to go to technical illiteracy in one generation if people think that an application is a GPS-enabled way to find some movie star's home, or that there's any reason on Earth to use one application to watch snippets of South Park and another to watch the Simpsons.

^ Idiot. Why is it stupid people equate App Store with small, phone style apps? Clearly you have no vision whatsoever. I bought MS Office online through Digital River. Downloaded it, got my key and installed fine. Then I had to reinstall Windows due to a hard drive failure. Downloaded my copy of Office a second time (one year later) and installed it again. Didn't have to worry about paying again or anything. This to me is far better than me having to keep multiple backups around when I want to install something. It's always available on the App Store.

Why? Because the interface at download.com sucks. The search function sucks. And if I download a program and want to buy it then I have to go through the payment system of that particular developer. That means if I buy ten apps then I've just given my credit card info to ten different companies (maybe less if some of ten share a payment processor). I'd rather have my info with a single entity (app store) than scattered about over several companies.

And if I need to reinstall an app then I have to go through the developer again to get a key after I've proven that I do in fact own their app. With an app store they have a record of all my purchases.

I use Digital River myself, but I never saw them bill themselves as an app store. Online software retailer, maybe.

It is nice to see someone with such string opinions as ericburnby. He's sure to liven up our discussions. Those of us with the antiquated notion that there is more than one way to skin a cat will soon be edified.
