This is normal. Wait for service pack 1 until you install new MS-OS! After that the life will be much more easier! They changed the driver system a bit so it will take time to get those drivers updated... once more. How many times we have seen this happen when there has been driver upgrades... hmmm... every time I think.

I have 2 Windows 8 machines that were upgraded from previous machines. I have not seen either of these patching issues. This article is really the first I have even heard of issues related to the release ... could the author site some of the sources he is using?

Just did a google search on Windows 8 patch issues, top 10 stories talk about patches being released not massive numbers of people having issues with patches. Jumped into bing, google and yahoo and did a number of searches like Windows 8 patching problems, issues with win 8 patches, broken patches and pretty much nothing brought up this huge issue your talking about.

OS's have bugs, they get patches, things happen with new OS's ... even Apple. Shrug. Usually if you write an article on something you back it up with sources, if you don't its just an op ed.

Like others have said, probably bad drivers. Had Vista '64 bit' for years and it was perfectly fine except for a few bad drivers. This is more prevalent on very cheap hardware.

Haven't tried the retail version of Win8 yet but with Start8 my issues with it should be gone.

I bought my daughter a macbook air for school work. You could say I paid $500 over the top on the price of a windows laptop. But it has saved me hours of not having to fix stuff for her. I used to have issues with her laptop every night with some sort of config error or printing problem. I dont spend any time on her macbook. I have saved well over $500 worth or time, pain and suffering and I am not supporting M$ and their poor product implementations.

apple has too support far less hardware, like an enormousness amount less, and apple never admits fault either, they play third party software, their favorite is flash player
