My friend called me saying that explorer on his windows 8 laptop died. He has "no desktop and multiple reboots" in his own words. Is there any way to fix this or re install Windows 8?

Solution

Did you try:
- Running this via booting into SafeMode?
- Using the Windows Recovery Disc's Command Prompt...

I would suggest using a boot-disk and trying sfc /scannow.
That attempts to fix corrupted Windows files and it's done repairs for me before when I was hacking themes together.

Pugsofwrath's friend here.

Canadianvice, I did as you suggested, running sfc /scannow, doing so as Administrator.
However, the scan failed to complete. It stopped at 77%, saying "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."

I tend to go straight to the latter, as I've had the best luck with it. I didn't say boot disc for my health.
Since you have a friend, perhaps he can assist you with getting such a disc together, or you can download a legal image via DigitalRiver if you have no boot-repair disc or OEM media. Either or will work.
