If they have finally found a way to keep piracy down (or even stop it) maybe they will drop the prices of their OSs..... or double them.

[citation][nom]kelfen[/nom]Microsoft get a life! piracy isn't an issue[/citation]

I have several friends who pirated Windows 7. It may not be a HUGE issue, but it's there.

That being said, I'm not too fond of this idea...at all.

I will not buy Windows 8 if this is anything but optional.

Microsoft: if you release a good product, people will buy it. That is the rule. You made Windows Vista and people didn't buy it. You made Windows 7 and people bought it.

It really is that simple. Haven't you learned from DRM schemes in the music industry ? Just make a good product. Period.

you know, a simple hosts file edit and a home server solves this issue faster than you can say, where is the crack?

common... Ubisoft did it and it didn't work, what makes M$ think it can??

First of all, it doesn't matter how awesome their product is, a lot of people will still pirate it. Period.

Second, if this happens, you know there will be hackers who put their pirated win8 machines behind servers that spoof Windows "activation."

And third, I can't wait for windows 8! Particularly storing profiles on the cloud... as long as it's free...

[citation][nom]dargon_supreme[/nom]Windows is very popular because it can be easily cracked... You can get it anywhere. No Windows piracy = end of Windows hegemony.[/citation]

Erm... no. In developing world markets where piracy is rampant, acceptable and unchecked perhaps, but not in the west. How many large enterprises (the main customers of MS) used pirated software? Next to none. Does average Joe know how he should pirate Windows? No.

The small number of people that are both geeky, greedy and irresponsible won't end Windows hegemony.

On topic: I'm rather opposed to a cloud based OS. Apart from many obvious benefits, there are security issues. And what about those who lack a fast broadband connection?

I will never be 100% on the cloud, I don't care what software makers think the future holds. If I can't access it on my local machine I just don't want it. It's bad enough so many computer games come with crap like GFWL and SecuROM (at least Steam lets you play offline), but imagine if your whole computer were somehow dependant on the internet. I don't know where most of these people live, but my internet goes down, frequently (Mediacom wants me to take time off to fix THEIR problem, what a racket).

I'm not sure what the point of cloud-based profiles is. So you can log into your account on a friend's Windows 8 machine? How is that going to work, are all your apps going to be on the cloud too? I really don't care if I can access my "My Documents" folder online, if my friend doesn't have the right programs installed it won't do me any good (yes, I know Microsoft is moving Office to the cloud, but think more broadly, think non-Microsoft).

If they thought people avoided Vista because of bad publicity, they will certainly avoid W8cloud.

Personally I will avoid anything cloud-based. When I started with computers someone else owned the computer and they let you use it when they felt like it. Then computers became personal and it was great. We should never go back to having someone else tell us when we can use our/their computers.

The whole "cloud" marketing gimmick is getting very annoying. It seems like about a year ago we all just decided to start using the word cloud instead of distributed systems, thin-client apps and the server-based apps on your web browser. It's not like someone build an effin' cloud and it made everything else obsolete; it's the same idea as it was a decade ago.

Does anyone else here cringe when they hear those "to the cloud!" commercials?

[citation][nom]bill gates is your daddy[/nom]A machine operates without ever having an internet connection....how does Microsoft suggest Windows 8 run on that type of machine?[/citation]

How about reading the article before posting?

"Windows 8 will supposedly use backup kernels if an Internet connection is unavailable"

Yeah, I can see it now for people still using dialup... "Booting kernel - 4 hours 12 minutes 43 second remaining"

"I need to make a phone call, can you shut down the computer?"

YES!
Wtf can the cloud do that my computer can't? It might take 0.188356 seconds longer for my computer to do it locally, but I don't really care. Any extremely processor-intensive task that would actually benefit from cloudage would probably be forced to run locally anyways. It's no more than the latest buzzword designed to con people who don't know what they're doing into buying a technology they don't need.

If MS does this, than it´s a matter of time until they start loosing market share and thus giving other SO market share mainly Linux.
This is why I don´t believe cloud environment is in the best interest for MS, at least in the OS area.

As for me cloud is of absolute no interest at all, will not buy anything that works based on cloud.

@Silmarunya

Our school provides access to MSDNAA. For development purposes people are allowed to install a copy - how many of these do you think are solely for the purpose of learning and development? How many are used outside the license agreement and thus are technically pirated (when doing things like playing Bioshock or reading Tom's for fun)?

Once you count these student/educator violations along with the various TechNet and MSDN license violations, I think you will find piracy is greater in the "West" than first thought.

First of all, the article is all speculation, so don't bash MS just yet over something that they haven't done. Second, while I'm not fan of having my OS call home every time I boot up, I do kind of like the idea of cloud based user accounts. If I can log into any windows system anywhere, and have access to my personal settings that would be pretty cool. Of course, not having physical control over my own data would be unnerving.
