Windows 8 not seeing 2nd SATA drive

I have built a custom rig using the following

Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UP5 TH
Windows 8 PRO OEM
Seagate 2 TB SATA (secondary)
OCZ 120 GB SATA 3 SSD (primary

I have loaded Windows but the 2nd HD does not show up in My Computer. I have gone into disk management and it does not show up there like others have suggested. It does show when go into my BIOS. Any help?

Hi Steve, & Welcome to Tom's Hardware!

The OS presently does not recognize your SATA 2TB drive. Please check in the Device Manager to see if it is recognized as a Hardware device under Drives, and if working properly on the properties dialog.

Are you by chance using a sSata for cache?

You should have your primary SSD on SATA_0 (lower white), and the 2 TB on SATA_1 above it. Your DVD should be on SATA_2. Don't use the SATA_5 or the Marvel GSATA_6.

Hooked up that way, please upload a screenshot of your Disk Management dialog box (My computer, manage, computer management, lower left Disk Management), so we can see exactly how your OS see the drives and if they are basic, MBR drives.

Also, did you set the SATA configuration to AHCI on the Integrated Peripherals page?

Lastly a question for you - by OEM do you mean the System Builder version of Win-8, and do you know if that version comes with retail type call in MS tech support of the new OS like has been available for prior "retail" versons? AFAIK, they are not offerring what are called "retail" boxed versions. I called MS today and they had no idea about tech support for enthusiasts buying the non upgrade version.

Thanks John, First time posting on here but I do enjoy this site.

Yes OEM meaning System Builder version. I dont see anything for tech support on this version. Does not even come with a booklet or anything. Just a place to hold the CD and the license so small it was hard to read.

The device manager does not recognize the drive.

Not sure how to check the sSata for cache. I know I did not do that on purpose if it is.

I did change the configuration, I put the SSD on SATA_0 and the 2 TB on SATA_1 above it, but this did not change anything.

You could have a faulty hard drive, have you tried the hard drive in another computer?

I'm having the same problem and there's no fault with my hard drive. It works fine with Windows 7, Vista XP.

Try updating your ACHI driver. Windows didn't detect my second drive after I replaced my main os drive with an SSD, and after I got the proper "ACHI" driver it worked. So that might be worth looking into.

Other than that I would suggest trying to boot into linux on a dvd or usb drive and see if ubuntu detects it. You could do things to it from there like format it that might make windows detect it properly.

I agree, if the drive is OK and shows in the BIOS then the problem must be with the AHCI driver. I have had a similar problem in that the second drive fails to show but the third drive was fine which was caused by the AHCI driver. If you have one try fitting another hard drive.

I have resolved my issue now. I downloaded the new SATA drivers off of Gigabyte's website, put them on a disk and then re installed Win 8 and installed the drivers on install. I really did not want to re install windows but since I had only had it on a few days hadn't really customized it as much as Id like to starting over again was not that big of a deal. Thanks everyone for the help.

Glad your computer is now functioning OK.

Sometimes just going up to to the MB website, and downloading and installing the latest chipset driver could do the trick, but your way worked just as well, with only a bit more time involved. And just as logical!

I'm having the same issue with my Gigabyte MB and Windows 8. I have the Gigabyte "Intel SATA Preinstall driver" from their site. I'm going to do a re-install of Windows 8. Could you explain how you did the driver install during the Window install (do I use a USB flash drive or a CD?).
