Windows 8 or Windows 7?

Will windows 7 or 8 be in my better interest? I will mostly be playing games and recording. Also will be doing some video editing. Will windows 8 be able to run programs such as DxTory and Sony Vegas? Also will it run the majority of the games? I won't be using any of the touch screen features. I will be adding a start menu if I choose to go with it, so that's not a problem. What do you think? Thanks in advance.

Windows 8 has compatibility with most things that run on windows 7, so you shouldn't worry about your apps not working. It really boils down with personal preference. Are you ok with the new UI and does it bug you that you cant use the new touch screen stuff? If no, then windows 8 will be fine. Plus, if they do, there is software that will mod windows 8 to look exactly like 7, so either way, I suggest you go with windows 8

#1 If you are just going to use Windows 8 as a glorified Windows 7, then just use Windows 7. Do not buy Windows 8 and mess it up with god only knows what 3rd party software. It doesnt have a start menu for a reason. (I wished people would just get over it already, if you really dont like it that badly then quit buying it)

#2 For video gaming most people notice about a 10% improvement across the board in performance going with Windows 8.

#3 Windows 8 is a better version of Windows. It is much easier to use, and has much more indepth controls of different features (like networking and such). It also supports better hardware, along with maxing out older hardware.

#4 It is simply a prefrence.

I suggest windows 8 as you're going to be gaming and windows 8 is going to be the only OS to receive directx 11.2.

At this moment win8 is allso getting more and longer time support than win7 is going to get. The support for win7 will end 2020 so you have to update your os before that in anyway. With win8 you can go longer. If you buy new machine before that, it is not a thing you need to consider. It is more about what you prefer.

Buy Windows 8 OEM , because you can move it to another computer when you are done with the current one.Windows 7 OEM is tied to the first motherboard you install it on.

OEM versions of Windows 7 are identical to Full License Retail versions except for the following:

- OEM versions do not offer any free Microsoft direct support from Microsoft support personnel

- OEM licenses are tied to the very first computer you install and activate it on

- OEM versions allow all hardware upgrades except for an upgrade to a different model motherboard

- OEM versions cannot be used to directly upgrade from an older Windows operating system

OEM vs. Retail

OEM Windows 7 comes preinstalled on computers. This is the cheapest way to buy windows. Large PC manufacturers like Dell, HP etc. (collectively called royalty OEMs) install windows on millions of such PCs. The main characteristics of such systems are:

The license agreement and support agreement is between you and the PC maker, not MS.

Activation by the end user is not required. Windows is preactivated at the factory by the OEM using images and standard SLP keys.

Your copy of windows is locked to that PC. The license is not transferable.

OEM system builder is what you get when you buy from say Newegg or from a local "white box" vendor. It too has the characteristics of Royalty OEM windows. Although it is possible for an individual to buy a System Builder copy, the license requires that the software be installed using the OPK (OEM preinstall kit) and then resold.

Retail version is what you buy from a retailer like Amazon or Bestbuy. Its a full price version that comes packaged in a retail box with a retail product key. It has to be activated online via MS servers using the key on the box, it is not tied to the PC it was first installed on, though it can only be used on a single computer at a time. And, MS directly provides the support for it. It is also more expensive than OEM copies.

As far as functionality is concerned, theres no difference between any of the versions above, given any specific edition (i.e. between OEM pro and retail pro, or between OEM ultimate and retail ultimate).
