Newbie here. Since i'm about to get a new laptop (which is on windows 10 by default), I would like to ask if I can still transfer files between 2 PCs via ethernet cable even if my old PC has Windows 8.1

Yes just share a folder on the new pc. Connect to it with the old one and copy paste.

Not direct PC to PC via the cable.
Connect both to your router, yes.

EDIT: Well, yes you can. A lot more fiddly settings, though.

Modern pc’s don’t even need a crossover cable. Assume you’re asking this since you dont already have a router to plug them into?
