Windows 8 reinstall

I had updated my windows 8 to 8.1 from windows store freely.. But it is asking to activate windows(i.e.,windows not activated) by using key product. To get the key product amount to be paid as in the steps. I dont know how to solve this. I have tried to reinstall windows 8, but i have no proper idea. Pls help me..

do you have your original win 8 key?

Did you activate Window 8 before the update to 8.1 ?
Did you make any major hardware changes to your pc?
