Windows 8 tablet stuck on "Failure configuring Windows updates, reverting changes"

I have an Asus VivoTab Smart that comes with Windows 8, and before I can do the 8.1 upgrade, I have to install all 112 updates. This was going just fine until after it rebooted, and now it's been stuck on the "Failure configuring Windows updates, Reverting changes" screen for about the past 12+ hours. I restarted it a couple of times by holding down the power button, but it comes right back to the same screen after the Asus splash screen. Were this a laptop, I know exactly how to fix it (go to Advanced Recovery Options), but since it's a new tablet that I haven't yet connected its Bluetooth keyboard to, I'm basically stuck. I can't even boot to a flash drive because that requires a keyboard to get to the boot options.
What can I do? None of the other forum posts related to this work because I don't have a keyboard attached to it and because the OS isn't loaded (can't get the Charms bar so I can restart it that way or boot into Safe Mode or anything.)

Solution
I had a similar problem with my Surface Pro 2, except it was stuck at 75% updating.

On Surface devices, you can boot to a USB drive by holding volume down and pressing the power button. My USB drive was loaded with Win 8.1 and I fixed it through restore points.

Perhaps your device has a similar combination to boot to a USB drive. If not, looks like you will have to call Microsoft, or return it.

Yes volume down + power worked to get boot options! Thanks for that one.
Unfortunately, since the bluetooth keyboard isn't connected yet, I can't hit "Enter" to select the device...how do people do this w/o keyboards? I had to buy mine separately.

UPDATE: I got my 4-port USB hub out and a USB keyboard. I just need to put Win8 x86 on my flash drive, then hopefully I can boot to it and use the Recovery options. Will keep you posted

All right, I got it to work! Thanks for the tip! Updates are still incredibly sluggish, I'm only doing 10 at a time and it's been downloading for the past few hours (on a 12 Mbps connection, so no clue why), but I'll finish someday...

Glad you're getting somewhere :wahoo:

I have the same trouble, what did you do to get it to boot? Kinda stupid go slow.

I had the error where it could not load to desktop. I restarted the machine and pressed F1 or whatever was the 'BIOS' or startup key. I then set the boot UEFI to boot from CD, then I placed an Ubuntu derivative (LXLE) disk into the drive. When I rebooted the advanced reboot option sudden;y appeared and I was able to run REFRESH.

Will use small updates this time. It appears as though the Linux didn't matter, but it must have triggered something in the Win8 boot process.
Best of Luck!

I pushed on the power button... restarting, push F1 or F2 and it should take you to trobleshooting options. I had to reset mine and as precaution disable automatic updates. Hope that helps.

I have same problem with You on my asus vivotab me400 and just solve it, I hope my way can usefull.
1. Turn off tablet
2. press power button + volume down until tablet on and enter boot device mode
3. there are menu "Windows boot manager" & "Enter setup", just select "enter setup" use volume down button to change menu and windows button to enter. You will enter bios menu mode.
4. on bios mode, select tab 'Security' and select 'Disabled' on menu 'Secure Boot' & 'Default key provisioning'. You can use volume up button to switch tab, volume down button to switch menu, and windows button to select menu.
5. Save & Exit bios mode
6. You will now enter and stuck on screen with "Failure configuring....." just let it go, wait the process untill it enter screen restarting automatic.
7. After the process success Your windows will normal again, it work on my vivotab, hopefull it also work on yours too.

sorry my english not good :) i hope You understand what i write.

To exit bios mode just select "Save & Exit" tab, and then select "Save Changes and Reset".

To switch between tab menu use volume up button, to switch menu on tab use volume down button. Windows (sign) button used like enter on keyboard.

Thanks for the help, Ive managaed to get into the bios and do everything you mention however i am now just stuck on the "failure configuring windows..." screen? Its been over an hour now. Any suggestions?? The tablet was signed into a wifi network that i no longer have access to - is this a problem perhaps??

Hi!
I had the same problem as you mjiles. Tried everything nekomata1619 wrote down (thank you!) but was stuck with the "failure configuring..." screen agian, didn't want to go away.

I did like this, don't really know which step in the sequence that did the trick. This isn't my area at all so, sorry if the technical language is kind of... "novice". Well,...

1. When I had the Vivotab shut down with the Power button I took the end of a paperclip and hold it for maybe 10 seconds in the reset "hole". Nothing happened and I tried it again. No success.
2. Pressed the Power button again and the "ASUS startup page" turned up as earlier but with the word "Wait". I expected the "failure configuring..." screen agian but instead I had two choices. Obviously the paperclip did something!? First I was stupied enough to choose "Restart computer" but, there I was, had to start all over again.
3. The other choice was something like "Advanced ...". That's the one! Don't remember the exact steps here but I think I choosed number 2 of 3 choises, "Advanced tools/settings..."(?), anyhow I ended up with the option to reset my computer.

I don't know if the problem will be the same at next windows update but at the moment I have my Vivotab back to normal. My tablet was new and I hadn't done so many changes from factory settings. Otherwise it had been a bit of an annoyance.

I am sorry for my newbie skills and the fact that I don't know the exact steps. With my knowledge it is more of "trial and error" than expertise and I just tried to write down what I just did. :)

Good luck!

I have a Sony Vaio laptop running Win 8. When I turn it off, then turn it on using the power button and dowm volume button per the posts, the computer turns off again. If I hold down both buttons just long enough for the system to turn on, then I go right back to "Failure configuring Windows updates." I refreshed my system a couple of days ago and started reinstalling the 110 available Windows up in a small batch of 6 updates. From past experience, I knew that trying to do all 110 updates at the same time would create a fiasco. This was the first set of updates that I tried to install. I can't believe that Microsoft did away with the F key boot options. For those of us who knew what we were doing when accessing our systems this way it is a nightmare. But I suppose the overall goal was to protect the novice from messing up their computer.
