Windows 8 update problems

I am having issues updating this Windows 8.1 laptop. The computer is an Asus X551MA and it was brought in for a tune up, therefore it is not mine and I do not know if the owner of the laptop has done anything to it before it came into my hands to make updating Windows this difficult.

I have already ran Virus scans on the computer and anything that was on it before has been removed. At first when I was trying to update Windows, it would be scanning for updates for well over an hour. I tried both on Ethernet and WiFi and nothing. After a few restarts, the computer then had over 120 updates it needed to do, but then I had a 0KB 0% completed error despite trying to leave the updates to run for two hours (also, tried Ethernet and WiFi). I tried installing all 120 updates and only 1 update at a time and still the same results with 0KB 0% completed.

Well, tried the Microsoft Update FixIt tool and that scanned and "repaired" errors but now when I go to the Windows Update page now, I'm just staring at a white Window- the only thing I see in the Window is just the navigation at the top that says Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Windows Update. When I ran the FixIt tool again, it would say "scanning for errors" and it never progressed from there.

Again, I have ran virus scans, the system is clean. I have used the MS FixIt tool and it now has caused me to look at a blank white window. I have ran the Check Disk error and while it did find errors and repair them, it has not helped anything else.

I've also tried running an elevated Command Prompt using these prompts:
wuapp.exe /detectnow
wuapp.exe /detectnow /updatenow
(wuaucIt.exe is not recognized on the command prompt for some reason?)
All it has accomplished is pulling up a blank Windows Update screen that I keep talking about.
The final thing I have tried is booting Windows up in Safe Mode With Networking and I am still getting the same unsuccessful results.
So does anyone else have any suggestions on what I can try?

Hi! Just tried your suggestions. sfc/scannow is so far the only one that showed some promise- I am no longer looking at a white window and it shows 132 updates needing to be installed, but now I still get the 0Kb at 0% issue (been leaving this to run for 6 hours on just one update and still nothing...). Your second suggestion I was not able to get past step 3 due to computer just not wanting to cooperate and stopping the service- the final thing I did try as well but also did not help me once I tried installing updates. Are there any other suggestions you have for me?
