Windows 8 won't shut down my computer fully

I have had some problems with my laptop, I had to have the hard drive replaced. well with all of this happening I also installed windows 8. now when I go to shut off my computer it says it is shutting down, but my computer never fully turns off. The power button is still on and you can tell it's still on because the sound for when you plug in the power cord comes on. sorry for such a long post. but I don't know how to fix it.

I think your leaving it in sleep mode. Windows 8 is a pain for shutting down... they did not make it simple.

press the windows key + r to bring up run box
type powercfg.cpl and press enter
click on choose what power buttons do
click on change settings that are currently unabailable
uncheck turn on fast startup and then click save settings

create a new shortcut and paste the following in the target C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe -f -s -t 00

You can change the shortcut icon to a shutdown icon. Then I right click the shutdown shortcut and pin it to my taskbar.

uncheck turn on fast startup and then click save settings

actually for me it is not that
the computer just does not shutdown
i go to options and actually press shutdown but it just turns screen black
and randomly restarts
the backlit keyboard never goes off

ya, that is how we know it is not shutting down, but going to s4 or some other sleep/hibernate setting. for me it was my mouse's blue led on a glass table, follow the steps and it should fix it.

something every post like this fails to mention is that you must restart your pc for the changes to take. i tried thees steps several times in different ways and it never worked until i decided to try a restart. after that thees steps worked.

im having the exact same problem too and i know its not going to hibernate because i actually go to menu and click on settings then on power then shut down and it wont shut down only way it fully shut down is if i force it by pressing the power button for a while but it should be able to shut down when i click on shut down... idk what else to do if anybody finds a solution other than pressing the button for a while

Exact same issue, I've had fast boot turned off for months and no effect. Very frustrating when you're using as a media server and remote logging in from another room. Have to actually be there to restart it manually!

Win 8 or 8.1 goes into a suspend mode when you try to shut down.
Apparently this is to save time when starting up Windows. STUPID MICROSOFT THINKS THIS IS BETTER
To turn off computer completely, hold the shift key while you click shut down.

ok, so i think i've hit the jackpot with this OS! I've spent nearly 10x more time configuring it than all of the previous windows versions combined. needless to say, its so bad, that i've had to resort to wasting time searching for regedits and hacks just to make it usable. so back to the topic. i've had the exact same problem, but someone here mentioned the power states. i had to turn mine off as well as cool n' quiet on my amd board because these two were just dragging down the performance of my pc. my new sandisk extreme pro was getting single digit 4k reads and writes in crystal diskmark. once i turned off all these power saving features, the performance shot through the roof! i am now getting 8 times the performance numbers, mainly what other review sites are reporting on their benchmarks! chances are, your power save states might be turned off as well, which is why the pc isnt shutting down completely under winblows 8. i'm sure you've figured out by now how to deal with the not shutting down problem...control panel>power options>choose what the power buttons do>change settings>uncheck the "turn on fast startup".

Is there an easy way for those of us who are not too computer troubleshooting savvy to do what you say you did to fix the shutdown problem. aka: instructions on how to check all the power saving features of our machines? I've done everything else all other posts have suggested and yet nothing is working. Thanks!

Hello guys, I had the same problem with my laptop over 3 months and now after I looked up all information over forums, I noticed that this problem is characterized for laptops with two video cards (Intel graphics and Nvidia or Radeon), also I found information that Intel Graphics card drivers are modified by laptops manufacturer and they are different than default from Intel web or Microsoft updater. After all that I finally found solution: I gone to my laptops manufacturer website, downloaded and installed all Intel drivers (even if it was older version than already installed). Also if there were not drivers for your OS, try installing for previous version(I had Windows 10 but installed driver for Windows 8.1). After all that, my laptop started work normally. You also can try reset BIOS boot settings to default.

I've had the same problems a few months now. Read a lot of possible solutions:
- Configure what power buttons do. Disable Fast Boot. Make sure power button actually shuts down the pc.
- If you have an intel processor make sure some graphics driver is on a previous version (if you are on windows 10)
- Go to your bios and set default order on boot options (F9 when on Boot tab).
- Reinstall, windows.
- Try shutting it down with Ubuntu.
- update Bios Software.

I've tried all of these and certanly they do work on some cases but not mine. There's one last thing that I haven't tried and its taking out the CMOS battery of the motherboard. If that's not the case I'm done here. I'm out of ideas. I guess it's just motherboard problems.

Hope someone can give me a different solution to this. And I hope you can solve your issue by trying one of the methods I listed previously.
