Hi,

I have recent got hold of an old Inspiron 7000 laptop with Windows
98SE.

The machine works fine apart from an extremely annoying problem.

Randomly, and with no prompting from myself the context menu (i.e. the
menu that appears if you right-click on a mouse).

This action appears to happen irrespective of what I am doing. In fact
if I leave the laptop alone, it will bring up the menu randomly.

Has anyone encountered this problem before? I could find no information
on a fairly extensive search of the internet.

Any help would be gratefully received!

Hi Gllen.

Good point! The keyboard is looking pretty dirty.

Thanks for the response.

Could be one of a couple of things.

It could be an electronically "stuck" menu key on the keyboard (if you have one).
The key has a picture of a menu box with a mouse pointer arrow on it, if you have
that key on the laptop. If found, try tapping it a few times to "un-stick" it.
Also, with the laptop off, cleaning the keyboard with a spray can of air may help.

The other thing is that it could be a fault of the mouse button. if you are using
an external mouse, try replacing it. If you are using the built-in buttons on the
laptop, there may be a way to clean them by dismantling the mechanism while the
machine is off. I don't know that model well enough to give you more details.
