I'm having a problem with windows 98 and it not shutting down correctly. What happens is that when I go to shutdown everything freezes on me just showing the hourglass & being idle. Can anyone out there point me in the right direction for fixing this problem. Is there a certain procedure to take or something I have to change to resolve this problem.

Try this first, and see if it helps: However, this is specific for Win98SE.

<A HREF="http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/contents/WURecommended/S_WUFeatured/Win98SE/Default.asp" target="_new">http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/contents/WURecommended/S_WUFeatured/Win98SE/Default.asp</A>

If this doesn't correct the problem, use the CTRL+ALT+DEL keyboard command to bring up the Task Manager. "End Task" on each listed program,(except explorer and systray), one at a time. When you discover the file that is keeping the system from shutting down, run a search, and/or run MSCONFIG, and look in the Startup tab to discover which program the file is associated with.

Then either delete the file from the startup, or attempt to upgrade the program, in the hope that a newer version will fix the problem.

Programs can sometimes also run out of the Startup folder on the Start Menu.

If none of this fixes the problem ... come back and tell us about it. It might be a device driver, and that will require a different set of instructions for you to repair the problem.
