Windows activation problem

Hi everyone
I'm having problem activating Win10 pro on a new PC with a old harddrive with win10 home already installed. Here is what happened..

I purchased a new PC with a small harddrive with 10 pro installed. Because I need more storage space and since my old hard drive from my old PC works fine, I decided that I will swap out my old harddrive (larger capacity) from my old PC and install on my new PC. The new PC has Pro and the old PC has Home. I read in a forum that it is possible to put a HDD with win10 home into a win10 pro PC and win10 home will upgrade and activate since win activation is based on the motherboard. Looking back that does have some truth to it, but perhaps not completely. So I installed the win10 home HDD into the new PC that had win10 pro previously activated on the smaller HDD.

After installation, everything was working and naturally win was not activated since the product keys for the 2 PCs and versions of win are different. I went to MS store and was able to upgrade the old win home HDD to win pro using the new PC's win10 pro product key. I assumed it was because the motherboard matched the key. Unfortunately, afterward win will not activate. Why would I be able to upgrade to pro, but not able to activate?

PS - I had to change out the new PC's DVD drive. Could this cause the problem? If I reinstall the original DVD drive, would win activate?

are you concerned about losing any files on the bigger drive?

If all you want to do is use the larger capacity and not the old licence, you should be able to fresh install win 10 onto bigger drive in new PC and windows will install the Pro licence based on what was previously on the PC.

on another PC, download the Windows 10 media creation tool and use it to make a win 10 installer on USB

change boot order in BIOS so USB is first, hdd second
boot from installer
follow this guide: http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/1950-windows-10-clean-install.html

when you reach the screen asking for licence, click "I don't have a key" and win 10 will continue to install and reactivate once finished

On the screen where you choose where to install win 10, if it gives you an error about GPT drives, delete all the partitions on the hdd and press next. If it still gives error, cancel out of the installer and restart PC and start installer again, it will accept next on that screen this time (some PC just need a restart here)
