Hi there, I've been trying to install Windows 8.1 on my newly built computer with a Gigabyte Z97X Gaming 3 motherboard and a Kingston v300 120GB SSD. For the first day of trying to install this I spent the whole day trying to figure out errror code: 0x8004242c which just dissipeared the next day. Then I came up with this message: "Windows cannont be installed to this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu." That's exactly what I did. The controller is set to AHCI mode and I changed the boot order to UEFI then SSD then DVD_ROM. This worked first try. Then it got to the part with restarting so I let it do it's thing. After this it brought me back to the begining with the "Install Now" button. I though maybe I just have to go through and put the product key in, etc. That was not true, I got to the "Where do you want to install Windows" screen and then it just gives me the same error. (Windows cannotbe installed to this disk....) Now no matter what I set the boot Sequence to it gives me the same message. Sorry for the long post. If you need pictures let me know of what and I can get them to you. Thanks!!!

if the install was started and failed from the cd rom to the hard drive or ssd. you have to go into advance mode and delete all the partion on the hard drives. windows needs to set up a system restore partion on the boot drive. if the drive already partion out it cant. if your using a usb boot stick make sure you made it using windows iso to usb tool. some time ruffus made sticks wont work. if your going to go from windows 8.1 to windows 10. from a working pc use the windows media creation tool and make a bootable usb iso stick of windows 10. the newest iso of windows 10 will take your windows 7/8 key code and give you the free upgrade with one install of the os and not two. with the newer iso installer it have the newest chipset drivers for the newer mb. if you dont want windows 10 then you need to put on a usb stick or use the mb driver cd to install windows chipset drivers and the ethernet drivers. at the start of window there a key f6 you hit then add custom drivers.

I've deleted the partions and I've used diskpart to clean it already. I have also formatted it. Now I can't get it to install again it just gives me the same error.

i had this problem in 2017:
Brand new pc i had built myself (about the 250th pc ive built)
wouldnt load windows 10 to my 2TB HDD?
Tried a few tricks and tried another new HDD, no difference.
Checked BIOS and found no hdd?
Checked settings listed above, nothing changed??

Finally changed sata cable to a different slot...boom, worked as usual??
