Windows cannot be installed to this disk.

Hey guys,

Just got a Kingston HyperX 3K 120GB SSD and want to do a clean install of Windows 8 64bit on to it.

However, when I get to the 'Where do you want to install windows?' screen, I get the error message:

'Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu.'

Any suggestions?



Additional information:

I do no have another HDD plugged in (it is to the PSU, but not via SATA to the mobo)

If it's so simple that you can be a tool about your answer then can you please tell me how to do what it is telling me to do? Using Intel X79 Express Chipset.

disconnect the power from all the other sata hard drives attached

Make sure the SSD is plugged in to SATA port 0

I wasn't trying to be a tool about my answer, I just feel the error message is very clear and straightforward. Go into your BIOS settings and make sure the controller is enabled for the SSD.

@Outlander_04 At one point, my Toshiba HDD showed as being in SATA port 0 and so I disconnected that cable from the HDD and put it into the SSD, but then it showed as the SSD being in port 1 or 2, not 0, which actually confused me a little.

lol. That's the same thread I already had open in another tab, in fact that's how I found this site and I even copy/pasted the majority of his question, but it didn't really help me unfortunately and that's why I decided to see where a new thread got me. That guy's setup is different from mine and may be prone to differing answers.

SATA port 0 is the actual port on the mb . Its the first one the BIOS will check for a drive when it scans .
Connect the SSD to SATA port 0 . The number will be printed on the mb

Just wanted to let everyone know that I went back to tigerdirect, exchanged the drive for a new one, connected it to SATA port 1 straight out of the box this time (used as secondary drive last time until I got my windows 8 reinstall disc in the mail, then deleted all partitions and tried to reformat in setup for windows, but it would not show up under 0, it showed up just as port 1 as previously stated) and it came up as under port 0. I am running the windows installation now. Thanks for putting up with me everyone. I knew it couldn't be this difficult and that everything was set up correctly, I just screwed up the drive formatting and made it so that certain things were not as they originally had come when purchased and it threw the whole system out of whack, but now everything is well.

No other hard drives attached

There is no physical port 0. A new drive will show up as port 0 when connected to port 1 (1-6 on my mobo) with no other drives connected. This was the confusion. My Toshiba HDD would show up as port 0 while my SSD connected to the same port would show up as port 1 and it drove me bonkers.
