Windows computer suddenly slow

I have a windows xp laptop that I have been managing to cope with for a while. I use it for writing or for storing files, maybe check an email. videos are a bit of a hassle so I don't use it for that but I have played on an emulator and I even tried to download a torrent with utorrent. Now it's slow to the point that I have to waste 15min just to get it to work. Usually it would go automatically into a sort of sleep mode when I would leave it inactive for a bit and I would just have to press enter to start it. NOW the green light stays on and every time I have to turn it off by holding the power switch then reboot it. I stayed up all night with avast trying to scan for a virus but it didn't find anything.

How am I supposed to know if there is a virus when Avast says that it is protected?

fresh instalation of windows but if you can install windows 10
replace thermal paste on cpu and gpu
