Hey guys, I've been trying to do a blank install of Windows 8, but I've run into some problems. I have created a usb drive with the windows installer. When I go into the windows installer, everything goes fine, I can select the empty space to install on, then when I get to installing, as soon is it starts, I get this error message:

Windows could not prepare the computer to boot into the next phase of installation

It happens right as the installation starts, and the progress is still at 0%.

I ran memcheck86+ for a couple hours, and it didn't spot anything wrong with my memory. I also updated my bios to the latest version, neither solved the problem. I made a windows 7 installer usb as well, thinking I would just install 7 then use the upgrade assistant to move to 8, I got the same error when installing windows 7. I redownloaded both, still didn't work. I even tried installing it on a new hard drive, then an ssd, same problem.

I figured it might have been a problem with creating a bootable usb, so I went out and got an external cd drive, since I don't have any bays in my case. Still didn't fix it. I'm totally stumped. Anybody know how to fix this?

Solution
sata express sris is set to auto try disabling this. if the does not work set ahci to ide and try again or leave ahci disconnect all other drives and try installing windows with only 1 drive I know its a bios issue but your cgoing to have to delve through it to figure which needs to be toggled on/off to make it work.
post your specs, but I am guessing your bios is not configured for windows 8 and is configured for xp causing an issue writing to the drive. Some mobo's have options for xp and older OS while the newer OS need them enabled.

Hmm, I have a brand new board, so that would be weird if it was the case.

Here's all the important stuff that could possibly be affecting it:

ASUS Z97-PRO (I updated to bios build 1204) - Mobo
Intel 4770K - Processor
Corsair Vengeance Pro 8GB 1866MHz - Memory
Seagate ST2000DM001 2TB - HD (1TB/platter if I am correct) <-- This is the drive I am intending to install on
Seagate ST500DM002 500GB - HD (500GB/platter I think, but not sure)
Adata XPG SX900 64GB - SSD

Stuff that probably isn't the cause of the problem:

Asus Striker GTX 760 4GB - Graphics Card
NZXT Kraken X61 - CL water system
NZXT H440 - Case
EVGA SuperNova G2 750W - PSU

Huh, what do you know, I've finally, after four painful days, fixed it! Seems like removing all but the primary drive worked. The installation is in progress at the moment, I just hope it doesn't fail later. Thanks for all the help man, I've tested absolutely everything, and I somehow didn't think to just disconnect the drives...

You're going to be the best man at my wedding, you are a real life saver.:cheese:

It's finished all steps except "finishing up," and now I get a message stating:

Please unplug the following external dive and click OK to restart your computer and finish installing Windows.

C:

I'm pretty sure C: is the internal HD, but I'm not sure. The only drives I have plugged into my computer are my HD and the install usb, and I don't have anything else plugged in except 1 monitor, keyboard and mouse.

Nevermind, just googled it, I guess you are supposed to unplug you're install usb near the end of the install.

I booted from the install CD and it installed fine first time. Do not try to install on speedster partition while in Windows. Then you can use Easy Transfer to move your data.

Hi,

Acer 5745G , BIOS default setup, install windows 7, it's OK.

Unplugging all the drives worked for me! BIG THANKS
