My windows 8 desktop has been making random Shortcuts of any folder in random partitions (C,E,F drives).

Sometimes I will find the music folder on C drive having a shortcut inside say a video games Directory folder, or say adobe photoshop on another drive. It is absoultely random. Sometimes even connected flash drives and USB HDDs have been seen having generated shortcuts of random folders from my PC. And for some reason the most reccuring one would be probably be the E partition, where I always keep videos, music media, editing softwares installed.

The phenomenon is not hindering performance, crashing the system. It is benign in nature, but still got me concerned as I do not understand what it is. What could it be?

You have malware and/or a virus. Windows does not, cannot, do this on its own.

Make sure your system has all current updates.
What is the state of your antivirus?
What malware applications do you have? When did you last run it?

I have windows defender, but lately it just wont update.

I use Ccleaner regurlarly! :) as for antivirus I dont really use anything other than windows defender. Because AV software causes so much havoc for gaming. I mean all the time for this or that video game it blocks out stuff. Creates more work. Honestly, AV makes life more complicated IMO. 🙁

More complicated than what you're seeing now?
