2024-09 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Version 22H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5043076)

It just won't install; apparently it has tried every day for a while. The error code is 0x800736b3. I am not a W11 expert by any stretch, and frankly not sure what to do. What is kind of weird is that another version(?) is available (same title, KB5043145).

This home built PC originally had W10, and I upgraded years ago without any issues.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

You can force install updates using a (Run as Administrator) command prompt. Will check for all outstanding updates

1. Open a command prompt as Administrator
2. Type: 'UsoClient /StartScan' (without quotes) press Enter
3. Type: 'UsoClient /StartDownload' (without quotes) press Enter
4. Type: 'UsoClient /StartInstall' (without quotes) press Enter

May still not install, but it's worth trying with command prompt as an alternative.

Thank you, thank you.
I will give it a try.

Update: Tried installing the newer (145), unfortunately same outcome. It did get to 69% install before it failed. The error code is:

Install error - 0x80070002

I am open to any other suggestions...thanks.
Since the DISM and SFC commands didn't work, and you're still facing issues with both updates, I recommend trying the .NET repair tool as RUSerious suggested. Sometimes .NET framework issues can cause update failures. If that doesn't resolve it, KingLoki's method of using the command prompt to force the update might be a good next step. Also, make sure your system date and time are correct, as incorrect settings can sometimes cause update errors. Good luck, and let us know what works!

Thanks for the replies and suggestions; a strange update this morning. This is what I saw when opening the windows update window:

2024-10 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8.1 for Windows 11, version 22H2 for x64 (KB5044033). Successfully installed on 10/9/2024

2024-10 .NET 6.0.35 Security Update for x64 Client (KB5045998). Successfully installed on 10/9/2024

2024-10 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Version 22H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5044285). Install error - 0x80070002 (note: it failed at 100% install)

No mention of 2024-09 at all. What can this mean? Should I just ignore all this?

Also, does it make sense to attempt to upgrade to 23H2 or 24H2, as my current 22H2 is apparently end of life-ing?

Again, thanks for the help.

Have you ran the windows update troubleshooter?

Also, temporarily disable windows defender ( or other security software)
& The windows firewall.
Turn off internet & try installing the KB update file you have.

Alternatively, 23H2 is a good upgrade.
24H2, be aware that by default it encrypts the system as part of the installation. You can disable it during install with a modification.

Thanks for the suggestions; saying that, what if I just not do anything? Just leave it alone...it works. It sounds like updating carries its own risks.

Perhaps the least risky approach is to wait for MS to release the 23H2 or 24H2 update?

normally this would mean 1 of 2 things;
either the previous update has been amended with the latest version(s),
or it already installed in the background and worked while you weren't paying attention.

likely there is just a later version of the same cumulative update and it continues to fail.

MS Update has been having issues throughout this year with security features with both Win10 & Win11.
i've seen many similar reports, and suffered a couple myself, from both camps reporting the same random issues with certain updates.
each time though, eventually a new version is released that actually works.
does it make sense to attempt to upgrade to 23H2 or 24H2...
what if I just not do anything? Just leave it alone...it works.
one option has been to perform a fresh install of the latest MS Windows package that already includes the specific updates.

but if the system is performing as it should and these updates don't include anything that would benefit you, why bother?

I did an upgrade from within windows from 22H2 to 23H2 and it is very stable and error free. No problems so far.

Do you have much on the drive that you would want to backup beforehand?

This morning a new option appeared. In Windows Update an option to run Windows 11, version 22H2 (repair version), so I started it.

A few minutes later a note came up that my PC doesn't meet W11 system requirements. It doesn't support TPM 2.0, whatever that is.

Is this good or bad news? What should I do?

Thanks guys.

I don't know what motherboard you have but most motherboards from the last three years or so have a virtual TPM that you can enable within the BIOS setup. Have a look for fTPM or virtual TPM in your BIOS setup and if it's there then enable it.

The TPM is a Trusted Platform Module and it handles cryptography and related features to improve the security of your PC (see https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/what-is-tpm-705f241d-025d-4470-80c5-4feeb24fa1ee). Windows 11 requires the use of a TPM (although there are some alleged hacks that allow installation without one - I advise against trying these)
