I'm using Vista home premium SP2 32bit,
in a lenovo n200 3000 laptop.
Windows defender used to be update without a problem, but suddenly when
trying to install a definitions update using the windows update i get this error:
Windows Update encountered an unknown error 80508001
I tried to install the update through windows defender, but i get another error: 0x80070643
All other updates are installing ok using the windows update.
I tried to install the fix that reset Windows Update components, but didn't solve the problem.
I also tried to change the name of the SoftwareDistribution folder, but it didn't help.
I read that sometimes the 0x80070643 error is because of a problem with the .NET .
so i tried to run the .net repair tool. it didn't help.
I uninstalled all of the .Net versions, and reinstall. didn't solve the problem.
I also tried to install the defender definitions update manually from downloading it from here:
https://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/definitions/adl.aspx
I downloaded the "Windows Defender in Windows 7 and Windows Vista 32-bit"
After it asked for permission to run the file, it didn't open any window, but i was able
to see the hard drive is doing something, but after a few minutes it stopped,
and when i checked in windows defender, i was able to see that it didn't update it.
Finally i gave it up, and i reinstalled Vista from scratch.
After it installed all the updates (including SP1 and SP2), it tried to install the defender
definitions update, and what do you know, same error!!!
I didn't installed anything on this new vista installation (except the windows updates)
before trying to install the defender definitions update.
so i'm almost sure this error is caused by some windows update.
Also, i remember that the windows defender definitions updates were always small,
even less than 1MB. This current failed update is 39.9MB.
