Windows defender was unable to complete the update: 0x800800

I have a legal copy of windows on my laptop. Windows defender says definitions havnt been updated in 128 days, but when I try to update windows defender it says:

"Windows defender was unable to complete the update: 0x80080005. Server execution failed."

I have searched microsoft and everywhere and there is no record of this problem anywhere. I have tried re-installing the program, nothing helps.
Do i have a hardware problem?

Do you perhaps have a firewall that is blocking Defender from connecting to the Microsoft server?
