Windows Defragmenter stopped mid-stream

I'm running XP defrag and it has been stuck at 21% defragmented for a couple
hours (on a different computer than this one I'm sending from), I don't know
what to do now. Is it ok to just "stop" it or will that cause evil things to
happen. It seems to be in the middle of "Moving file
_Registry_machine_Software". I think this might be the first time we've run
defrag on that machine.

Hope someone out there can give me some guidance so I don't goof my computer
up. Thanks ..... Tom

Did you run it in safe mode? If some other programs run while its trying
to do the defrag, may hang in between. Bootinto safe mode ( when only
the necessary stuff is loaded) and run CHKDSK first, then run defrag.
Also have you made sure you have enough free disk space for defrag?
Defragment regularly so that the system if free from performance
issues. If you dont it is bound to take a long time when you finally
try to run it.

Thanks Doodle, I wasn't familiar with the safe mode, or running CHKDSK.
I'd finally graduated from "ME" os and guess I didn't learn about that along
the line. I'll look up the info on booting in safe mode, although if your
still monitoring the post and have a minute to send a quick note on how this
is done I'd appreciate it. I'm an infrequent computer user and seem to get
lost when I use the installed help or the microsoft help on-line (quite the
project for me to get this far!!) Thanks ... Tom
