Windows delayed write failed

Hello,I have my music on an external drive. When I try to use the iTunes say to create a play list I get the windows delayed message. I then have to unplug the Ext drive and power up again. The music plays fine on iTunes the problen only occurs when I try to sync to my iPod. Any help would be appreciated.
