windows delayed write failed

My friend's dad was having problems with his son's computer and I went over to help him out. I'm sure the son throwing the computer off his bed didn't help (it broke the CPU fan, the heatsink has been replaced).

I took out the jumper from his maxtor HDD and hooked it up with an IDE cable to the dad's computer.

I'd done it about a week earlier, to move things to the new hard drive, and everything worked fine.

Now whenever I boot the computer it'll recognize the maxtor HDD (G:) for a few minutes, then give me the (from what I've read) dreaded "windows delayed write failed. windows was unable to save all the data for the file G:\$Mft. the data has been lost. this error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. please try to save this file elsewhere" error.

I don't know how to fix this and I'm HOPING it's not just hard drive failure, because it is recognized for sometimes up to a few minutes before that happens.

Any help?

The C: drive is SATA, and the erring HDD is the G: through IDE.
