I haven't used my pc for about a year and now when start it shows PXE-e61: media test failure, check cable and says boot failure.....

I am not that good with computers and don't know what to do.... And will appreciate some help!!!

It seems at one stage the PC was attached to a network:

PXE-E61 Media Test Failure Error
Article ID: 000005740 Last Reviewed: 04-Feb-2016
The error PXE-E61 Media Test Failure can occur at boot, if all the following are true:

Boot to LAN is enabled in BIOS Setup.
A network cable/connection is not present.
Network Boot is in the boot order before a present boot device.
To resolve this error, remove Boot to LAN from the list of boot devices in BIOS Setup.

Now can you tell us what type of pc it is and maybe we can give you directions as to how to do this fix :)

In BIOS Main
Processor Type-
Intel(R) core(TM)2 CPU
E7400 @ 2.80GHz
Intel(R) EM64T capable

If its the original hdd that came with pc, it is 9 years old. That is a fair life span for anything, yet alone something with moving parts like a hdd.

I would get a sata hdd from either Western Digital or Seagate, the size is up to you but you don't need a big one, anything you get now will be bigger than what you had. I know board accepts sata drives according to that ark link above.

Once you get the drive, post again and we can help you installing win 7 - I assume you have install discs... we will worry about that later :)

Thank you for responding to my thread...
I wonder how you know my hdd is dead and can i recover the files?
:) :) :)
Also i would like to upgrade my ram by 4gb ddr3, i would like to know if my mother board supports it....!

WTF is a pci hdd?

First of all you should check your BIOS to see if the hard drive is detected.

Next, change the boot order so that the hard drive is first and disable network boot.

The reason for "PXE-E61:media test failure, check cable" is simply that it's trying to boot from the network.

Ok colif I never tried changing anything in the BIOS....
And i see the hard drive is detected in the BIOS boot menu.
The boot priority is -
CD/DVD-ROM Drive
Floppy Drive
Hard Disk Drive
Ethernet

I might let tman1 help with hdd, he knows win 7 better than I do.

I wonder, is that actually showing hdd is there or just the boot order it should be using? I seem to remember hdd used to show on front screen.

Either way its not doing anything when you boot. I would have expected some life out of it, even if windows is not booting. Instead it goes straight through to Ethernet

About the ram, your motherboard can only support ddr2 and a max of 4gb, so save that money. :)
