ok ive had my A643500 @ 2.4 for ages but decided i wanted more. So i start messin around a bit and finding some guides. but when i overclock now, even to 2.4 it makes my windows boot just freeze up. Even running at stock and taking my ram down to 333 so i can OC from windows makes it hang. Whats going on with it 🙁

MSI K8N Neo 2 Platinum is my board also. My temps in this weather aren't going anywhere near 50C, currently its sitting at 37C on stock cooling. So i know there should be much more potential from this system.

i put my HTT at 5x when not overclocking but take it down to 4x when i want to overclock. and my cpu multiplier sits at its 11x original spot.

any help is greatly appreaciated as i have seen what 2.5 does to my cpu and i like it :)

ok ive managed to boot to windows but this isn't an O/C yet 😛

i just wanna know if this is a good starting place to be for overclocking.

alright heres how my bios is set up.

CPU Multi @ x11 (stock)
CPU Volt. @ 1.5v (doesn't show up as this in windows though 1.44-1.45v in CPUz)
HT Link @ x4 (x5 gives me my 1000MHz )
RAM @ 333 (400 Stock) set to T1 btw... I heard A64's dont like T2 timings.
Cool n' Quiet is Off
CPU is currently 36C so says SpeedFan. I would use CoreTemp but it made my computer reboot the last 2 times i tried :S so to hell with it :) even though it worked the first time i used it ....

so yeah... any advice, or know walls i would just hit would be nice to know

I don't know what MB and chipset you have or PSU.
Check BIOS and make sure the PSU is stable if it is 2-3 years old.

First LOCK your HD and GFX bus speed to stock (don't leave it set to AUTO).

The HT x RAM Mhz should never go more than 5% over 1,000 but still has loads of bandwith even as "slow" as 800 and you will never use all 800 anyhow.

I like to leave all voltages @ stock as the system runs cooler and will live longer.

Few people know this but your RAM voltage should not be more than 2 times the CPU voltage.
This is becuase the memery controler in the CPU is connected dirrectly and has DIODES that are ment to use this ratio....fry them and you killed the CPU.

RAM @ 333 (400 Stock) set to T1 btw... I heard A64's dont like T2 timings.

You must have it mixed up...the AMD's run better @ T1/CR1 while Intel may not like it depending on the RAM settings (higher speeds may need T2/CR2).

thanks for replying.

My psu is a quite reputable ST60F and is less than 6 months old (probally the best thing in my computer) 😛.

My AGP is set to 66. And before i came back online to check i set to T2 timings as i was having absolutely no luck getting past 230-235 fsb.
I am unsure as to where i find the lock for the sata drive :S i been through my bios plenty of times and haven't seen an option for it.

My motherboard has the nforce 3 250 ultra.

I'm gonna keep trying but i may have just hit an invisible wall 🙁

You seem to know what you're doing. There are only really 4 walls:

1) The CPU
2) The RAM (underclock it while you're finding the upper limit of the CPU)
3) The HT Bus (always keep below 1000 to be safe)
4) The FSB (You can find the limit for this by taking your CPU multiplier down and then raising the FSB)

From your post I guess only (4) could be the problem? If it is, a bios update is usually in order.

yeah i was thinkin i might need to do that. So i have had the latest live update downloading for the past 5 - 10 minutes 😛

when this is done updating n installing ill see if there is a newer bios. I've only updated it once before which was about 2 weeks after i got it.

just an update....

installed new bios, got a few new options under my memory settings but nothing special. Anything else i haven't noticed.

i did mangage to boot to windows at 2.4 with default everything except memory which i just stuck to 333 speeds. But as soon as it went to load MSI Core Center it decided to freeze. So i am gonna get rid of this bloody program.

Any suggestions for somethings that can overclock in windows better ?

Keep in mind its an AMD Athlon 64 3500+ (newcastle).

just thought i would let u all know to not bother anymore 🙁 its an fsb wall and my cpu wont overclock to windows from the bios now anyways. God i wish i had a job so i could just have some fun with a conroe/allendale
