Windows has lost a bunch of icons - how to fix?

Hi all,

I'm messing around with a Dell L702X which has a copy of Windows 7 on it that is behaving very strangely. All the drivers are installed and the devices working, but some of them (for example the wireless connection) that should have icons appearing in the system tray do not. The wireless connection is working, but there are several spaces in the system tray where the non-icons are sitting, and when I click on 'customize', there is no icon next to the wireless connection and several others. Does anyone know how to fix this?
