i have win 2011 home server,i allso have 3 computers.i ran back up on the 2 with no issue the 3rd my primary can not back up.it starts and then stops.get a message back up did not run successfully .it does have quite a bit of data.i am guessing that i do not have enough memory to run the back up.but before i start adding additional memory i need to know that is the case.windows forum did not offer any assistance, nor tech support.not much info on this product, shame since it is a window product.any advice or assistance ,thank you vanniko63

If the third computer has a GPT disk, it will fail every time. This is a documented issue with WHS 2011 and it not likely to get fixed.

You can use a third party backup solution including the Windows 7 Backup tool to write a backup to a shared drive space on your WHS 2011 system -OR- you can reformat the system to MBR.

Is the 3rd system indeed using GPT?

backing them up with server 2011,i have a dash board on my computer that ties in to server,i can perform back up from this computer or directly from server, both have to be on line.
from either dash board i start back up select pc 2 the back up starts gets to about 5% stops.their is realy no error code, after words get message (back up unsuccessful) that's it. now i have no problem backing up p.c.3 and pc.1.the diffreance is that those pc,s have much less data to back up.i was thinking of adding a drive or replacing with larger.but i need to know the issue before wasting time and money.think you for your reply Microsoft forums has a limited server comunity and got no help from it or support.

all models are 2010 and after all have win 7 64 bit.only see 3 partitions on my hard drive .so GPT should not be a factor.and the computer that is not backing up is the newest gateway only 9 month ,i believe it has lots of data .but before i spend time and money would like to know issue .

thank you for your reply,if you could greatly appreciated very frustrating,

honestly i did not even know what a GPT is,i looked it up and is associated with older HD,s with many partitions.i have a new pc with newer hd about 1 year old,i checked disk manager and see total of 3 partitions on hd.running NTFS.i also have a gameing PC that doies have SSD and it does back up.My lap top being the oldest also backs up but my gateway PC the newest does not.diffreance between them is gateway has lots of data to back up the others do not.if i recall to do proper backup i have to have 10% more space than the back up.what is puzzling is there is no error showing to indicate an exact issue just back up was not successful.

WHS won't give you a lot of detail on backup failures. That has always been a problem (even with WHS v1).

How much data is on the problematic system? Also, how much free space in on its individual storage devices (SSD, HDD)?

Also, are you connecting to the problematic system via a wired or wireless connection? If wireless, try wired until you get a good backup.

Another thing to try is to stop the backups of the 2 good systems and manually start a backup of the problem system.

Last, what are the specs for your WHS system?

Sorry, I forgot to get back to this thread. The problem I found I had was my computer has serveral raid arrays in it one of which has a 4gb partition on it. WHS11 cannot deal with partitions this large. 2TB is the max.

Check to see if the gateway has a harddrive larger than 2TB. If it does we can work around it by shrinking the partition to <= 2TB.
