Windows Installer causing crash

I have been experiencing problems with my pc, upon start up, it works for around 30-45 seconds, giving me just enormous time to see that windows installer is using more than three of my four gb RAM. I have searched the internet all day but it doesn't work for long enough to implement a fix. I use the machine for work but I own it so I can't have it not working. Please help me with the issue.

Windows version? Have you reinstalled windows recently?

Running windows 10, updated last Christmas

Where you trying to install a program right before it was having issues?

Have you tried booting into safe mode to implement any of the fixes you found?

Windows update probably running. Allow it to finish.
Today rather large update rolled out.

It was either KB3172985 or KB317342. Took really long time to download and install.

Computer freezes so don't know if it could be downloading the update, how do you boot in safe mode on windows 10?
