Windows keep crashing when I do large processes

my computer keeps crashing windows 7 when I do large excel processes. I am doing the same processes i always have,, but the last month it seems to crash the computer once or twice a day.

I also had it happen a couple times without excel even running, so I believe the problem is hardware related.

my cpu hits 100% during any big process in excel or on my computer, but i think thats normal. what isnt normal that it will just crash and shutdown, and i have to manual turn on the computer.

i have AVG on my computer, so i don tthink its a virus issue or anything is running that shouldnt. Is there anyway to tell if the CPU is just overheatting during these large processes and shutting down? is there a some settings in the bios that i can adjust to see if something prevents this from happening?

Get Cpuid Hardware Monitor. You can monitor and save the data with it.

It could be that the thermal paste on the cpu is not doing the job anymore or the cpu heatsink is just very dirty and not circulating air through it.. Is this a store bought computer? If so what brand, how old and if possibe what cpu and heatsink.

okay i guess i will try that out, and if thats the probably, maybe i just gotta take things apart and put them back together.

everything is about 3 years old. amd fx8350 8 core processor i forget the heatsink

cpu got up to 86 c, 185 F when i just opened up ms excel file

is that very high?

yes too high. I think you might have to change your cpu thermal paste. also you may want to make sure the fans are spinning up. you did say it has been 3 years. i am betting the thermal grease(heat paste is almost gone
