Windows key transfer to a new build

I bought a laptop with windows 8 on it and now I want to build a computer. I don't want to pay $100 for windows so I want to use my old windows key. Is there any way for me to reuse the old key? How would it work? Can I still use the old hard drive?

I thought this too, But I looked at the key(Sticker on it) and it didn't have OEM in the code. Is there a chance I can use the code?

A new machine requires a new key, no way around it.

Why not just try. You might have activation issues.

No Windows 8 laptops or OEM desktops have a code anymore, it is encrypted in the BIOS by mandate from Microsoft. You CANNOT transfer it. YOU MUST BUY A NEW PRODUCT KEY

You can pull the key from the bios. The license just isn't valid for use on other systems.
