im trying to get the tool onto my external harddrive, but it always automatically tries to download it onto my computer(i dont have 8gb to download it onto my computer). how can i make it so that it downloads straight to my external usb drive instead of onto my computer? im using the external so i can put windows 10 on my new computer as a first time install

The iso is only 3.2 gb, you only need an 8gb USB as it needs more than 4gb to expand the installation when running. IN its idle state its just a file like any other. You don't get a choice as to where the media creation tool installs but you can choose where to put an ISO if you made one. The installer is small, its just the client to dl the ISO.

You will have problems getting it to install off a hdd, it only looks for USB flash drives or DVD during install and may not find a HDD when it restarts during the install. I know as someone else tried to install it off USB HDD and it kept failing.

move library contents etc to hdd temporarily and then copy them back after? I don't know what your biggest folder is, you could copy a steam library over, especially if you intend to fresh install anyway.

not sure if thats obvious or not :)

If you going to dl the iso, just set its save location as the external hdd. I should have thought of that before. if you used media creation tool to make a USB, I don't know where it stores the file while it downloads it but there isn't anything left on hdd after it makes the USB.

if you use rufus to make USB it can make it off the external drive... so can windows for that matter. Downloading ISO is easiest when it comes to space management.
