Alright, I recently upgraded to win2000 pro from win98. I have 3 pci cards in my machine right now:

SMC nic
Turtle Beach Montego II Quadzilla
3D Prophet II MX

Win2000 have set all these devices on IRQ 7. This is causing some sort of conflict with my sound card. And it won't let me change the IRQ settings.

It was a bitch to install the quadzilla drivers in win2000. I had to install the vortex drivers THEN the quadzilla drivers as an update. They wouldn't let me install the OEM turlte beach drivers right off.

Now, I have it working from a driver standpoint. But I can't have sound with video.

* I can use winamp, realjuke, or any other mp3/cd player and there is no problems what so ever.
* I can play any video in most media programs without a problem. But if I play an MPEG video in kazaa or windows media player, sound cuts out (after about 30 seconds) and I can't get it back until I restart. I can play videos in adobe preimere and real player with no problems. But I haven't tested any other programs besides the ones listed.

What could cause this?

Not necessarily ...

Shared IRQ's in Win2K are a normal occurance, because of ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface). This is also why you have been unable to change the IRQ settings from within the GUI.

Have you looked in the Event Viewer for any error messages after the sound cuts out?

However, if you do have a conflict, the best way around it is to check the specs for your mainboard, and see which PCI slots are shared. You might find it necessary to shift around the PCI cards to different slots. For instance, I'd temporarily remove the NIC card, and check to see if the problem continues. I'd also consider trying out another slot for the sound card.

You may <i>still</i> have a driver problem. Are you running the latest drivers for each device?

How about listing your system specifications, just for the heck of it? There have been some incompatibilities with that particular sound card and older AMD/VIA chipsets.

You might also consider disabling the SoundBlaster Emulation, or forcing this to share an IRQ with the printer port:

Question: When you upgraded the OS, did you do a clean installation?

But I'd consider this to be a last resort ... you'll need all the drivers, for all your devices at hand, and it can cause more problems than it fixes. It's best to choose to run the system as a Standard PC during the OS installation, instead of afterwards.

Nothing has ever appeared in the events log. There seems to be no driver imcompatibility, I got the latest drivers from the websites. I have probably read through every page on the turtle beach site and any search engine page that is related to quadzilla problems.

I did a fresh install of Windows 2000. I created up to date driver disk for all my compontents before I upgraded. I even re-flashed my mobo. But the quadzilla wouldn't take the drivers when I did the install. I had to cancel it, then get the vortex drivers and install them. Then I had to "upgrade" my drivers to the turtle beach drivers.

My system:

900Mhz T-Bird

512MB sdram
3D Prophet II MX video Card
SMC EZ 10/100
The Quadzilla

I will try to disable SoundBlaster emulation, I will post with my results.
